What is ENeA?
The Early Nutrition eAcademy (ENeA) is an e-learning cooperation initiated by the Early Nutrition Academy (ENA) and the Chair for Medical Education at the University of Munich (LMU).
E-learning (or open distance learning, ODL) appears to be of growing importance in medical and lifesciences education nowadays. Due to the high speed of globalisation and increased required flexibility, also in the medical and lifesciences area, innovative ways of education and life long learning are burning issues. Moreover, time, travel and cost constraints make it necessary to have flexible access to education.
ENeA's aim is to provide CME accredited e-learning modules on topics in the area of early nutrition by translating latest scientific findings from international research projects such as the European Union funded EARNEST and EarlyNutrition projects, and other co-operating initiatives into practical application. The e-modules are conceptualised for qualification of health care professionals and new investigators throughout the world who aim at fostering their careers and improving health care services. The modules are created and peer-reviewed by leading international experts in the field.
We invite you to join the EarlyNutrition eAcademy and to learn more about the fascinating world of early nutrition!

First e-module on "Breastfeeding"
Whether an infant is breast-fed or not is important for shortand long-term child health. Breastfeeding in the first half year of life is clearly the best choice for a child's nutrition and well-being. Therefore, our first module focuses on breastfeeding, subdivided into three units in order to provide the user with comprehensive up-to-date information on breastfeeding issues.
This module has been accredited by the German Medical Association with a maximum of 9 CME credits (3 credits per unit).

Unit 1: Health effects for the mother and child
The first unit focuses on the protective effects of breastfeeding for mother and child health. Today, there is a large body of scientific evidence for a preventive potential with respect to different disorders, including among others overweight and obesity, type 2 diabetes, and high blood pressure. For other diseases such as atopic or inflammatory bowel diseases, further research appears necessary to gather more evidence on protective effects of breastfeeding. This unit also stresses other benefits for the child such as better cognitive development of breast-fed children, or with regards to the mother a faster and easier return to pre-pregnancy weight. Methodological information providing the user with competent knowledge about the classification of scientific evidence is combined with a comprehensive overview of contemporary scientific evaluation of the health effects of breastfeeding for the mother and child.
Unit 2: Practice of breastfeeding
Information of the mother and her family on breastfeeding, as well as practical support from health care professionals with breastfeeding expertise is needed to optimally promote successful breastfeeding. The aim of Unit 2 is to deliver evidence based education and training of the user regarding the practice of breastfeeding. A basic understanding of breast anatomy, lactation physiology, breast milk composition and nutrition during lactation subdivided into different lectures, is provided. In addition, Unit 2 features a huge amount of practical knowledge on the practice and promotion of breastfeeding that enables the user to provide informed counseling and guidance to breastfeeding woman.
Unit 3: Issues and challenges
Breastfeeding during the first months after birth is not always easily achieved. Unit 3 helps to provide guidance to parents in difficult situations with up-todate information. Medical contraindications of breastfeeding for developed and developing countries are discussed. Potential problems like negative previous experiences, premature birth, presence of maternal infectious diseases and maternal and child undernutrition are explored. Unit 3 also presents current findings on breastfeeding promotion programmes and discusses the association between socio-economic and societal factors and breastfeeding success. Approaches to protection of breastfeeding including regulations on commercial advertising, for example as advised by the WHO International Code of Marketing of Breast Milk Substitutes, are further important points. Unit 3 provides to the user an overview of how health care professionals can actively promote, protect and support breastfeeding in their professional setting.
